Gun Quote Friday: Athena Lee

Today’s gun quote comes from Top Shot contestant, Athena Lee. During an interview with the FoxNews.com Entertainment blog, Athena gave this great quote.

Lee’s quote has been hailed by shooters, and women in particular, for it’s witty message of empowerment. You can find her quote on shirts for sale by The Women of USPSA.

Governor Mike Foster

“My advice for women who are interested in shooting – don’t be afraid of a gun, it’s just a tool…it’s like having a baseball bat, but louder!”

– Athena Lee, Top Shot contestant

The old saying, speak softly and carry a big stick by Theodore Roosevelt, is now upgraded to carry a gun (and perhaps speak loudly). Ladies, go for it!

Gun Quote Friday: Governor Mike Foster

Today’s gun quote makes it on my list of favorites! Mike Foster was the 53rd Governor of Louisiana and shares this advice.

Governor Mike Foster

“Most people don’t ever want to use a gun to protect themselves — that’s the last thing they want to do — but if you know how and you have a situation with some fruitcake running around, like they’ve got right now, it sure can save you a lot of grief.”

– Mike Foster, 53rd Governor of Louisiana

A lot of anti-gun people assume that because we have guns we want to use them. That is not true. They are our “spare tire” so to speak. It is there in case it’s needed but we don’t plan on using it until it’s necessary.

Gun Quote Friday: Dr. Suzanna Gratia-Hupp

Today’s gun quote comes from a woman who saw the need for conceal carry first hand and fights for our Second Amendment right. Dr. Suzanna Gratia-Hupp was at the Luby’s massacre in Killeen, TX on Wednesday, October 16, 1991 with her parents. Sadly she lost both of her parents in addition to 21 others, plus more were injured.

Dr. Gratia-Hupp also wrote a book called From Luby’s to the Legislature: One Woman’s Fight Against Gun Control telling her story of how she turned her life towards politics.Today’s quote comes from part of her testimony to the US Congress. You can view her testimony in the video below.

Dr. Suzanna Gratia-Hupp

“The Second Amendment is not about duck hunting, and I know I’m not going to make very many friends saying this, but it’s about our right, all of our right to be able to protect ourselves from all of you guys up there.”

– Dr. Suzanna Gratia-Hupp

Ladies there is something we can do to make a difference. We can support legislature that preserves our right to carry and we can use that right daily hoping that we will not need to use it.

Gun Quote Friday: John Ashcroft

Today we look to politics for our gun quote. John Ashcroft was the 79th United States attorney general and served during the first term of President George W. Bush from 2001 until 2005. Previously he was the Governor of Missouri and a US Senator for Missouri. Here are his thoughts about the Second Amendment.

John Ashcroft

“Just as the First and Fourth Amendment secure individual rights of speech and security respectively, the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms. This view of the text comports with the all but unanimous understanding of the Founding Fathers.”

– Attorney General John Ashcroft

Isn’t it nice to know that some politicians can read and understand plain English? The same plain English that the Constitution is written in, granting us rights and freedoms.

Gun Quote Friday: Genie Jennings

Today’s gun quote comes from a woman who is quite familiar with guns – Genie Jennings, Contributing Editor of Women and Guns magazine. In her article, “Choosing to Have Fun: Amy O’Connell of New Hampshire” found in the January/February 2011 issue of Women and Guns magazine, Genie finds out what lead Amy to learn more about shooting.

“Women will make gun ownership appear as normal as it is.”

– Genie Jennings, Contributing Editor for Women & Guns Magazine

Wrapping up the article Genie says, “Women are the key to the future of gun ownership. There are more of us. We tend to be both more politically active and also more readily swayed. Women, whether they are mothers or not, are concerned with the survival of the species. We are quick to sense and react to danger. It is up to those of us who care about Constitutional matters to be sure that women are sensing and reacting properly to perceived dangers.

Women will make gun ownership appear as normal as it is. Women like Amy will swell our ranks simply by choosing to have fun.

We all understand that the Second Amendment applies to all of us – men and women alike – so women gun owners should not seem odd at all. Guns are not for men or women but for people. For protection and fun.

Let me know what it is that you find most enjoyable about shooting.

Gun Quote Friday: Dr. Ignatius Piazza

Happy Friday one and all! Today’s gun quote comes from Dr. Ignatius Piazza. You may have heard of him before, he’s the Founder and Director of Front Sight Resorts located in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dr. Ignatius Piazza

Regardless of what the unenlightened in the world may say, remember this my friend — you are the weapon and your firearm is just a tool.

– Dr. Ignatius Piazza
Founder and Director, Front Sight Resorts

A gun is a tool and is only as effective as the hands that wield it. It is not a weapon until in the skilled hands of one who has trained for the occasion. Merely having a gun at home does not make you safe and secure. If you are to be the weapon you must train with the tool.

Gun Quote Friday: Il Ling New

Today’s female gun quote comes from a Shooting Diva who used to be in marketing operations and now teaches at the Gunsite Academy in Prescott, Arizona teaching self-defense and firearms training. Is this an odd change? I don’t think so (this could be because I’m also in marketing). New’s clients include CIA, Secret Service, SWAT and Navy SEALs, as well as hunters, housewives and children.

“People think that when they face something, they will rise to the occasion. But we don’t rise to the occasion. We default to our level of training.”

– Il Ling New, The Gunsite Academy

New reminds us of the truth – shooting is a perishable skill. We need to practice regularly to maintain proficiency.Schedule time to go shooting regularly. If this is hard for you to do or keep up with treat it like a workout plan. Hold yourself accountable and get a buddy. You can even bribe yourself with rewards – like a new gun after reaching a consistent practice goal.

So what led to her career change? Did it have something to do with her personal experience of being mugged at gunpoint? You can read her story in the article She’s Got Guns, She’s Got Game.

Gun Quote Friday: James Earl Jones

James Earl Jones may be best known for his role as the voice of Darth Vader in original Star Wars trilogy, but I think he should be known for his opinion on guns.

James Earl Jones

“The world is filled with violence.  Because criminals carry guns, we decent law-abiding citizens should also have guns. Otherwise they will win and the decent people will lose.”

– James Earl Jones, American Actor

No gun control will ever take guns away from criminals. The only logical thing to do then is arm the law-abiding people so they may protect themselves.

Gun Quote Friday: Cindy Noyes

This week I read a great article on Gunup called “Tips from women shooters on how to get started in practical shooting” which interviewed several female competitive shooters. Today’s gun quote comes from one of these women – Cindy Noyes, Glock Shooting Sports Foundation Match Scheduler and Range Master. I hope you ladies take her advice if you are just stating out and be sure to read the article!

Cindy Noyes

“Many new shooters get discouraged because they are not used to the recoil of a gun… If they start with something like a 9mm, they are more likely to keep trying…”

– Cindy Noyes, Glock Shooting Sports Foundation Match Scheduler and Range Master

I myself started with a .40 caliber gun, but I’m stubborn and like power. I agree with Cindy, if you are just starting to shoot and are not sure if you’ll like it, you should start with a 9mm.

Is competitive shooting in your future? It could be if you get the gear you need and put in the time for training. Go get ‘em Shooting Divas!

Gun Quote Friday: Sgt. Sherri Jo Gallagher

Today’s gun quote comes from a Shooting Diva with impressive skill and dedication. Sgt. Sherri Jo Gallagher, U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit won this year’s National High Power Rifle Championship. She’s only the second woman to ever do so. Who was the first? Her mother, Nancy Tompkins, in the 1998 match.

“…I had the opportunity to join the USAMU and turn my favorite hobby into my daily life. Nothing could be more fun than that.”

– Sgt. Sherri Jo Gallagher, U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit

Congratulations Sherri on winning the 2010 National High Power Rifle Championship! Thank you for serving our country and keep showing the world how women shoot!
