Women’s Self Defense: Techniques and Training

I’ve been sharing information about women’s self defense this month but nothing makes up for real hands-on experience. I highly encourage you to take some self defense classes – make a day out of it with your friends. Places that may offer classes include martial art studios, some shooting ranges and specific self defense events or groups. You’ll have to do a little research in your own area to find the best solution for you.

In the article Women Self Defense Techniques we are told that the most important thing about women’s self defense classes is the information that is taught. The article shares the following to keep in mind.

  1. It will take many years of consistent practice and dedication to a martial art to properly be able to protect yourself in an actual life and death situation.
  2. Don’t get an inflated ego just because you took a couple of Tae Bo classes at the gym. This can do much more harm than good by providing you with a false sense of security. It is important to walk with confidence but never be over confident.
  3. A good self defense class will teach you how to prevent from getting yourself into bad situations like never walk alone in the dark. Have someone escort you to your car when you get off work. Park you car in well lit areas. Be smart and always be prepared for the worst.
  4. Knowing the proper information is a key element in self defense. Statistical information is vital to your safety. Many women aren’t aware of how common date rape is and never expect it to happen to them.
  5. A good self defense class will focus on techniques such as finger jabs to the eyes, palm heel strikes to the face, biting, and groin grabs. These will be practiced on an attacker in a padded uniform.
  6. Strategies and proper use of practical non lethal self defense weapons such as pepper spray and tasers is important. Without the proper training these items will be a lot less effective or even useless.
  7. Mental training should be largely focused on also. It is important to know how to carry yourself, and to know what to say and how to say it in the event of a confrontation. Many times a situation can be prevented and even avoided just by your posture. Predators attack the weak.
  8. You should be informed about lethal weapons as protection in the event that you should want to carry a gun or knife. This can be very dangerous to you if you aren’t properly trained by a certified professional.
  9. It is necessary to learn how to analyze your surroundings any where you are. By constantly knowing where you are and what is going on around you, you can better estimate potentially dangerous situations before you walk right into one.
  10. Learn how to create a safety perimeter for your home. We all feel the safest in our homes, so it is important to know what steps to take in order to keep your home from being a target of a crime.

FIERCE & FEMALE DVD SET

Another option to get you started in your training is purchasing self defense DVDs and who’s a better teacher than Dr. Ruthless? I have a new heroine! Melissa Soalt, AKA Dr. Ruthless is a veteran women’s self-defense trainer specializing in practical and full-force, scenario-based methods. She’s also successfully defended herself in physical attacks.

“If you must go ballistic, explode like a bullet straight into your target. Not like a firecracker in all directions.”

— Melissa Soalt, AKA Dr. Ruthless

Fierce and Female DVDDr. Ruthless’ DVD set Fierce and Female has 2 DVDs covering essential, uncomplicated techniques for stand-up attacks and defense from lying down.

“These tapes are awesome! The techniques are very clearly explained and demonstrated, but the most emotionally powerful parts are the scenarios that take place in ordinary settings – hallways, offices, a public restroom. They show unequivocally how effective these simple techniques are. Every woman should learn to defend herself with moves like these!”

— Lyn Bates, Vice President, Arming Women Against Rape and
Endangerment (AWARE); Contributing writer and editor, “Women &
Guns” magazine

If you’d like to learn more about Dr. Ruthless check out her site or listen to her podcast interview.

Ladies, I hope you’ve enjoyed learning about your non-lethal self defense options this month. As a responsible gun owner you need to be aware, choose the correct retaliation and know what to do if you can’t get to our gun.

Happy Shooting!

P.S. Just a friendly reminder that I’ll be releasing a FREE report about women’s self defense next week.

Women’s Self Defense: Tips from a Pro

Last night my church put on a short self defense lesson for the ladies. A police officer and former SWAT member taught us some valuable tips I’ll share with you today.

THINGS YOU SHOULD NOT DO:

  • DON’T be alone in the dark – avoid jogging along canals, high wall yards and secluded areas at night
  • DON’T go to the ATM at night – there’s a higher risk
  • DON’T put your purse in the shopping cart – you’ll move away and your purse may get snatched
  • DON’T have your hands full – you need to be able to fight back
  • DON’T travel alone if you can avoid it – most abductions happen when someone is alone

THINGS YOU CAN DO:

  • Yell and make noise
  • Let people know where you are, plan on going, and when you get there
  • If you are being followed in a car drive to a populated parking lot/store or a police station
  • When parking at night park under a light or by other cars
  • People are less likely to attack you if you are talking to someone on the phone

PHYSICAL SELF DEFENSE TECHNIQUES:

Ladies practicing self defense

Ladies practicing self defense

  • It’s most effective to gouge out your attacker’s eyes. Just push on the outer edge of their eyes with your thumbs.
  • With a fist or palm hit your attacker in the nose, eyes or throat.
  • Grab your attacker’s finger and bend it to break it for a painful distraction to make your getaway. Useful for those who are not very strong.
  • If you are going to kick, kick low aiming for the knees
  • Another kick option is to do a shin scrape – make sure you kick sideways, not straight on and gravity will bring your foot down the length of their leg.
  • Elbow strike into attacker’s stomach or groin if they attack from behind.
  • For more power use an assisted elbow strike – make a fist with the arm you’re going to use and cover it with your other hand.
  • If you carry a weapon for self defense be sure you are comfortable and knowledgeable with using it – it could be used against you if taken away or not used properly.
  • Be aware when using pepper spray – wind or proximity may get it on yourself – it takes 45mins to recover from its effects!
  • Make sure you are in a strong stance – feet apart, knees bent and rear out – think football. Arms up and out to defend. Most women want to straighten up and bring their arms in – it’s easy to push you over like that.
Strong Stance vs. Weak Stance

How will you react in a threatening situation?

Demonstration of the turtle position

Demonstration of the turtle position

THE TURTLE POSITION:

If you are knocked to the ground or pushed on your back get into this position if you can’t get up and run away. From this position you can kick at your attacker’s shins or knees. You can also change directions if they turn to circle you. Keep your hands up to protect your face and you can push them off if they fall on you from kicking them.

I’ll be covering more tips and techniques in future posts this month so be sure to come back or sign up for the RSS feed up top to be notified.

Women’s Self Defense: Cooper Color Code

Color. It is everywhere we look. It draws our attention and can change our moods. Color plays a very important role in my life as a designer, but the most important role it should be playing in my life as well as yours is that of awareness. By memorizing and creating a habit of applying the Cooper Color Code you will be safer in your day-to-day life. Not being aware makes you an easy target and being caught by surprise without a plan will make you freeze and panic, lowering your chances of survival.

“Some people prey upon other people. Whether we like it or not, this is one of the facts of life,”  says Colonel Jeff Cooper, author of Principles of Defense and combat pistol instructor. In his book, Cooper teaches us the combat mindset and how to use it for our own self defense which includes his Color Code system, used by most military and police organizations.

Cooper Color Codes Infographic

Cooper’s Color Code helps you “think” in a fight. “…your combat mind-set is not dictated by the amount of danger to which you are exposed at the time. Your combat mind-set is properly dictated by the state of mind you think appropriate to the situation,” says Cooper.

So how can 4 simple colors help you? These colors help you recognize, evaluate, and avoid potential threats that may come your way. You should flow from one color to the next higher or lower, depending on your situation.

Never be in white. To be safe you should spend most your time in yellow, even at home and other places where you feel safe. Make sure that you are constantly aware and alert.  You should shift from yellow and orange as often as you notice potential threats. When you are in orange, make your plan. Decide on what you can do to flee, defend, or attack. You must be ready with a decision to act if the situation escalates to red.

Ask yourself: “What would I do if that person walking behind me picks up the pace and makes a move toward me? What would I do if someone jumped out of the alley just ahead of me? What would I do if someone walking in front of me suddenly cuts my path and raises his hands toward me?” Think about how you would go from yellow, to orange and then red in these and many other situations.

Here’s an example of how the Color Codes of awareness could be used:

A 100-pound woman is walking to her car, carrying grocery bags. Being aware and alert in Code Yellow, she sees two suspicious men near her car.

She switches from Yellow to Orange. She decides on her self-defense options. They walk toward her and reach for her. She switches to Red, and executes her decisions: she throws the bags at them and runs back into the store.

Starting right now, be in Code Yellow. I hope you will take the time to study this awareness tactic and make it a habit in your life. This is not about living in paranoia but living prepared. Eventually, awareness becomes a habit.

Happy Shooting!

Women’s Self Defense: Awareness Quiz

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, nearly half of all violent crimes occur within one mile of the victim’s home. This may be because we become relaxed in our familiar “safe” surroundings. Awarness should be a habit that you don’t have to think about. Kathleen Baty, founder of SafetyChick Enterprises and author of A Girl’s Gotta Do What A Girl’s Gotta Do says, “It isn’t about living paranoid, it’s about living smart.” With proper awareness, you can reduce your risk of an attack.

Today lets find out how aware you normally are. Take the Are You Street Smart Quiz by Lifescript to find out if you’re taking the right steps to protect yourself and what you can improve on. It’s quick and multiple choice, you’ll just need to enter your name and email to get your results at the end.

I did well with a result of safety coming first but I wasn’t perfect. I could change a thing or two. How about you? Below are the questions you’ll find in the quiz.

Are You Street Smart? Quiz:

1. When you walk to your car, where are your keys?

2. Your car is in the repair shop. You need a ride somewhere. What do you do?

3. An attacker tries to force you into a car with a gun or knife. What do you do?

4. When shopping at night and returning to your car, what precautions do you take?

5. You’re staying in a motel. Which room do you request?

6. You’re getting an oil change. You hand the attendant which keys?

7. After work, you get into your car and do what?

8. You’re in a dimly lit parking lot and there’s a van parked next to the driver’s side of your car. What do you do?

9. When you go for a jog or walk at night how aware are you?

10. A suspicious individual gets on the elevator with you. What do you do?

In the next post I’ll cover the different levels of awareness and when you should be in each of them.

Happy Shooting!

Women’s Self Defense, Diva Style

National statistics indicate three out of four women will fall victim to at least one violent crime during their lifetime. Are you shocked? So was I. This doesn’t have to happen to you. You can learn safety strategies to lower your risk of being chosen for an attack, as well as increase your chance of survival by knowing how to act if you find yourself in such an unfortunate situation.

Many of us own guns for self defense, but we hope that we never have to use it for that purpose. As responsible gun owners we know that use of deadly force should always be your last option. Others do not wish to own guns. So what options do you have? That is exactly what I’m going to share with you this month.

I’ll be covering ways to be safe and protect yourself without a gun. I’ll cover awareness, self defense products, training and resources. Having this special topic for the month I’ll be posting a couple times a week, so keep checking in or sign up for the RSS feed. These posts will include quizes, videos and more.

After this series wraps up I’ll be releasing a free report on women’s self defense as a free download. You won’t want to miss it!
